After being almost done with the environment design phase of the project, we were introduced to sound design with a short presentation, here is a summary of what I learnt during it. These terms and more will come of use when we need to produce sounds for the ISIW project.

Sound and Audio

Sound is a physical thing and in short is a vibration that travels through whatever state of matter it happens to be present in, whether this be gas, liquids or solids. These vibrations are what your eardrum revives and turns into information for your brain to make sense of.

Audio is an electrical representation of sound recorded and processed through a variety of technology. Playing this audio back again creates the same sound and hereby becomes sound again.

Foley

Foley is a term used to describe the process of you yourself producing sound effects for the use of specifically things related to any kind of media post-production. The type of sound someone would produce can vary based on the project they might be working on, it could need to seem very realistic or on the other hand very fictional.

Diegetic and Non-Diegetic Sounds

Diegetic sounds are any kind of sound you're physically capable of seeing the source of the sound's production, an example of this could come from a music performance where you see the said artist playing instruments and moving their mouth to sing.

Non-Diegetic sounds are the opposite of their counterpart in which you're unable to see their source, an example of this could be the blowing of wind because wind is invisible. Most captured audio is Non-Diegetic.

Instead of using foley to create my sounds however, I downloaded a music making program called LMMS, which I used to create synth chords to help capture a better retro aesthetic feel then I would have been able to through foley.

After browsing the many sounds samples available to me I decided to use Soft Synth. I needed to create a nice sounding chord sequence using the piano roll.

The piano roll allows me to create great music without needing any expensive equipment, I settled with a basic chord composition and made it last 20 seconds long.
