~VFX Fundamentals (Nuke Introduction and Matchmove Scene Setting)~

Before I was able to insert my robot into a Maya scene which would allow me to correctly animate it, I had to match move the footage I received so everything would run smoothly together in animation.

The first thing I had to consider was the distortion within the lens of the camera, this of which would have to be adjusted to make the animation look more real. To do this I used a LensDistortion node, a node perfect for fixing this exact issue. To ensure I did this correctly I compared the distortion to a short clip of a check board pattern, I knew it was correctly fixed when the check board was completely square and fixed. Here is an image of the undistorted camera plate and a video of the original distorted camera plate.

After fixing distortion I had to ensure the scene was able to create the illusion of 3D space and do so correctly, without sliding geometry. To do this I used the Camera Tracker, this node is used for defying places of interest such as corners in order to create a multitude of points which will create a representation of this video within a 3D area. These points make up a point cloud. I also set some ground planes on the triangles placed on the floor to further defy a 3D area. Here is the point cloud.

After this I shifted to and from the video view to the 3D view in order to construct 3D geometry fitting the space of the computer tower, the point cloud being on all the corners of the computer tower really helped me to position it correctly. I then exported this matchmove for it to be used when animating the robot in that said project.

The project went well because I really got to grips with the software relatively easily and definitely understand the matchmove process more, I eventually found out that there were sliding issues with my matchmove later on so there had to resort to a different matchmove to complete that project.

Matchmove video unavailable to due nuke issues.
