Trigonometry is used in many fields many of them being:

  • Architecture

  • Music

  • Elevation

  • Games

  • Construction

  • Flight Engineering

  • Physics

  • Archaeology

  • Criminology

  • Marine Engineering

  • Navigation

Trigonometry follows the simple principle shown above, the square of the missing side can be found by finding the square of the two sides you have, C always being the hypotenuse.

This equation can also be reversed depending on what sides of the triangle you have.

The hypotenuse (hyp) is ALWAYS the longest side of the right angled triangle.

When given an angle, the opposite side (opp) is always opposite the angle, the adjacent side (adj) is always the side adjacent side to the angle.

If you have at least a side and an angle, you can use the helpful acronym 'SohCahToa' to figure out a side of a triangle:

Use Sine with Opp/Hyp

Use Cosine with Adj/Hyp

Use Tangent with Opp/Adj

Example question.

With this example, you must choose what part of 'SohCahToa' you have to use to find the missing side, you have the opposite and the adjacent parts of the angle to use so you must use Tan. Now that you know that you're using Tan, you have to follow the following:

tan(angle) = opp/adj (Toa) This in our case is 'tan(60) = x/13'

We now need to reverse it so x is left alone:

tan(60)13=x

x=22.51...
