A matrix is simply an array of values, matrices are plural.

Each and every matrix consists of multiple elements, they also have rows (across) and columns (up and down). Any equal numbered matrix (3 x 3 and 8 x 8 for example) is a square matrix, any matrix with one column (3 x 1 and 9 x 1 for example) is a column vector,

any matrix with one row (1 x 3 and 1 x 7 for example) matrix is a row vector an any matrix with different numbers of rows and columns (3 x 4 and 5 x 2 for example) is rectangular matrix.
